I'm fine with theology, I'm just not really into converting anybody and I'm not about to quote scripture.
Especially when a bar is the venue.

So that it fell to me to make sense of the nativity for her (not just to explain it, but to make it logical for her) is a gem of awkward hilarity.

A chalk piece I did for December's first friday at Cycle.
It's about 4 feet by 6 feet so I had to stretch for this one, and it's kinda an inside joke about me and the caramel production mode I go into once a year.
Plus, I don't play with chalk much.

But it was a LOT of fun.

Also, I tweaked the site a bit.
Hopefully, I've made things just a little bit better.

On the last day, Dad and I ended up at the Grove (looking to enjoy it's famous Farmer's Market and it's many delectable food carts.)

We wandered the mall a bit and found ourselves in a Crate and Barrel.

The next day was spent at Hollywood and Highland. There you can see the Chinese Theater and the myriad of hand prints laid down by stars over the years.

My favorite was that of one Humphrey Bogart.

A fabulous, fabulous man.
(And if you're young and have no idea who I'm talking about, as some of my surrounding peers that day clearly made evident, FORESHAME.

The first day of my Thanksgiving ventures was spent at Universal Studios.

Jurassic Park is only one ride I will not do, and am permanently glued to the sidelines for at Universal Studios:

Of course, they all did the log ride with the expectation that they could dry up in the fires of the Backdraft Tour. Which, as we found out only minutes later, is being renovated with a new attraction. And I would be remiss if I didn't say somewhere here that that new attraction is TRANSFORMERS.

Of the things I could talk about with this post, I will choose to talk about the wonderfulness that is Bolognese Sauce.
It's sorta like a sloppy joe with vegetables and wine mixed it.

My heart is broken.
I liked my giant bin trash receptacle.

But what really bums me out is that I know that this is just the first step to getting rid of our alleyways.

I live in Arizona.
More pointedly, I live in Central Phoenix.
Our parks are dry and empty.
We don't have forests.
Alleyways are the only place I know of here in the city, where things can be overgrown and intimate.
It's a very accessible natural wilderness, where I can feel alone in the middle of a city.
I like that.
And I will weep when they're gone.

On the one hand it could finally free them up to do things that they previously found inconceivable.
Like killing off a major character and NEVER BRINGING THEM BACK.

It would make it so their origins are just a bit more time appropriate.
(Superman fighting in WWII?) Not as likely anymore.

It provides the added bonus of less dramatic, unreasonably huge, over-arcing origin stories that are impossible to understand, and too unrealistic to be believed.
(I realize this is fiction and all, but even so; how much trauma does a character have to endure for publishers to be reeeally sure that that key point about the character being a tortured soul has been absolutely, without a doubt, drilled into our heads; unintentionally overexposing us and making it so we are completely numb to the idea that they ever suffered at all?)

On the other hand, their decision to make the big name characters 'more accessible' to younger viewership?
Very frightening.

Because it's all too easy to have the characters latch on to the newest fad as a means of making them 'just like' the audience they're trying to grab.

It happens a lot.
Not just because it's cheap and lazy.
Sometimes it just happens because there are too many cooks and the kitchen, and something that's flat, glaringly popular, and safe is the only thing that can be agreed upon.

But it does happen.
And when it does, it's occasionally insulting, because it intones a simple-mindedness about young readership and an over-eagerness to exploit that.

...

Basically, what I'm saying is-
Batman can be young.
His parents don't have to be killed by mobsters.
It could be religious and/or political extremists if you think that will tie more appropriately into the anxieties of our time.
Hell, you can make it so he actually kills people if you think that's what needs to be done.

But if he becomes more emo than he already is, you are on the path of failure.
And god help me if he sparkles.

Itty Phoenix Comic.Con '11

Sooo this is maybe a little over half of the sketch cards I did for Phoenix Comic.Con.

Loads of fun.
Many nice people.
But, not nearly enough time to get around and look at stuff.
Luckily, most everyone I wanted to say 'hi' to came to me.
So that was nice.
